Pergola vs Pavilion

One of the most common questions we see is, “What is the difference between a Pergola and a Pavilion?” The main difference between pergolas and pavilions come down to the roof:

Pavilions are typically built with the standard solid shingle or metal roofs you’re accustomed to seeing on houses.
Pergolas, on the other hand, will typically have a lattice roof, usually made of vinyl or wood beams, for a more open building.
Pavilions are more suited for use as a meeting place or other implementations where protection from sun, rain, and other weather is important, thanks to the solid roof construction.
Pergolas are often placed beside pools or other outdoor features to provide some shelter from the sun while still allowing a clear and open feeling under the lattice roof.

Similarities of Pergolas & Pavilions

Despite their differences, pergolas and pavilions also share many qualities.
